Painting Information

Oil Painting

Paint

You are never to young or old to start painting if you have the desire. I was gifted with creative and artistic abilities in many forms of Art, not just oil painting or watercolor painting. If you want to paint and have patience while learning the techniques and learn what your painting instruments can do for you, then you will turn out paintings that you will be proud of and want to share with others. Whether it is in the basement, garage, outside on the patio, find a place to set up to paint and let your imagination go. This article is just about the basics of what you will need if you are just starting out to paint. If there is enough interest then there will be other articles about painting, not only with oil paints but also in watercolor paint. I love them both the same. Totally different supplies and techniques.

Lets start by getting together what you will need before you start to paint:

You will need something to paint on: a cloth Canvas, and they come in a variety of sizes. I would suggest starting with a smaller but comfortable size (16x20) that isn't too small and isn't too large. You can also buy them in bulk, already primed, or you can also stretch your own canvas if you want.

Next you will need a easel to paint on: Easel's come in different forms: tabletop, standing, aluminum, wood....if you are truly interested in taking up painting as a hobby I would suggest paying good money for a sturdy one that fits your needs when you paint. Don't buy a tabletop if you plan on doing larger paintings. Standing easels are a good so that you can stand back and look at the painting, it will also be about the same angle and height as it would when hung on the wall.

Paint Brushes: choosing the correct Paint Brush is very important and can make a significant difference in the quality of your finished work. Make sure you buy paint brushes for oil paints. The length of the brush should be longer due to most oil painters stand up when they are painting. If you are going to do a lot of small detail it is best to buy a sable hair brush and it doesn't show the brush strokes as bad. You will want to also buy Artist Grade paint brushes and not the cheap hog-hair brushes. Your results will show the quality of brush you used. There are many types of brushes; filbert, round, fan, liner, 1", 2"....etc. You will also want to make sure you take care of your brushes when cleaning and storing them. Use a odorless thinner, you can also buy conditioner for your brushes. Store them flat or at least in a place that will keep the bristles from becoming distorted.

Paint (Oils): Oil Paints come in a variety of manufacturer's. I use Bob Ross paints and supplies. I find his paint is creamy and easy to work with. I suggest getting one of his Beginner or Master kits for starting out. Paint is very expensive and as you learn you will find that you will not use quite as much paint as you did in the beginning. It really takes very little. These kits will also give you the basic colors you will need because there a lot of color pigments out there to choose from. Buy the paint according to what you want to paint. You will not want to buy floral paint if you are going to paint landscape.

Odorless Thinner for paint: Odorless Thinner if you have painted before you know the smell of turpentine or solvents. This will do the job well and has a low smell.

Pallet Knives to paint with: Pallet Knives these are a must especially when you go to apply snow or shading on your mountains or cutting in water lines. There are different sizes and shapes so buy according to what you will be painting.

Pallet: there are different types of pallets to hold your paint. There are disposable sheets that you just throw away when your done with the painting or there are plastic and wooded ones. I usually put too much paint on my pallet and I just put some plastic wrap or aluminum foil over the paints and throw in the freezer. The paints will set up and become hard to work with if you leave them out.

Liquid Mediums & Gesso for painting: Mediums & Gesso these items will really help you in your painting. The liquid mediums help the paint to go on easier and help in blending. Use the Liquid white to prep your canvas and you will be amazed, use very little, it can also be used to thin down your titanium white paint when you go to put in water or snow on your mountains or mix a little with paint for highlighting, say trees. It helps the paint stick. Liquid clear is great for black or grey canvases, it does the same thing except there is no color. The Gesso's (water-based) are use to prime the canvas. DO NOT use your good brushes to prime your canvas. I use those cheap sponge brushes and just discard when finished. Then let the canvas completely dry before working with it. This usually comes in white, black and grey.

Misc. Items to use when to paint: You willl need plenty of papertowels, a paint brush cleaning can with a screen in the bottom of it, drop cloth if you don't want to get paint and thinner all over everything, and clothes you don't care about. To get ideas and learn other's techniques on oil painting , you can watch programs on TV (usually OPB in Oregon), the internet ( YouTube), purchase painting videos, or take a beginner's class at the local college or art supply store.

Well I hope this helps in pursuit of a enjoyable, fun, and relaxing experience for you as you create works of Art in your new found love of painting with oils. Happy Painting.

Acrylic Portrait Painting - Learning to Paint

Painting, people, takes practice. Painting people or portraits in acrylics is done by painting in layers. While you are building these layers, you may be tempted to give up too soon. As long as the features are placed correctly, painting portraits in acrylic just takes layers and patience.

How to get the person's feature correctly drawn.

Paint

Getting the person's features correctly is the most important first step in portrait painting. I suggest using the grid methods to do this. In this example, you are painting from a photo or picture. Use a pencil and lightly draw a grid with equal squares on the painting surface. Use another grid and place over the photo. The grid you use over the photo will likely be a much smaller one. On your canvas, within each square draw the lines of what you see. If you want even more accuracy, you can draw smaller squares within squares. When your drawing is accurate, you can erase the grid lines.

How to get the foundation of the portrait started.

Step number two is the foundation. The foundation involves using a thinned layer of paint for the person's skin tone. The consistence of this paint should be like watercolor. This is the under painting. Dilute the flesh colored paint with water and establish the entire skin area. You will add layer upon layer until you have built your shadows or highlights. The way that you do this is to reduce the amount of water that you add or just use the paint full strength. You should be able to see the pencil lines of the facial features. Now, use a darker flesh color and paint in the facial feature lines. Think of this stage as painting in the lines like a coloring book. After you paint in the features of the eyes, eyebrows, nose, nostrils and mouth you can work on the final layers of the finished painting.

Final layers and details in a portrait.

It is the final layers of the painting that bring it to life. Study your reference photo and notice where the shadows are. Layer by layer add the shadows. Because you are painting a portrait, don't be afraid to add red, and even blue to mimic flesh color. Add some highlights to make features appear to protrude. For example, notice on the nose, there is usually very bright highlights. To indicate the roundness of cheeks, chins and the center of the forehead, use a few layers of whitened flesh color to add these very important highlights. The last bit may be a touch of pure white.

The last thing to do in a portrait should be your final pure white highlights. Usually a person's lips are moist and have a touch of pure white. There is almost always a touch of pure white in a persons' eye where the light is reflecting. Remember painting people takes practice. Painting people or portraits in acrylics is done by painting in layers. Don't get frustrated if your first few portraits aren't what you expected. You will more than likely need to practice and practice. Have fun and enjoy learning to paint.

How to Paint People - Painting Human Eyes - Learning to Paint

Let's take a look at some step by step tutorials and techniques I use to paint people, specifically focusing on how to paint eyes with acrylic paint. This lesson is about painting and does not cover drawing skills or address proportion to a great extent. If you learn to use the correct techniques on your already finished drawing, you should do fine.

Accurate Drawing. First, you should start with an accurate drawing of the subject you plan on painting. Some artist use the grid method, while others free hand the initial drawing. One hint that you need to take to heart is this; If you don't have an accurate drawing, do not attempt to paint the person. You more than likely will not achieve a likeness if you don't have a likeness first in pencil.

Paint

Painting the eyes. I like to start my portraits with the eyes. Every single time that you paint an eye make sure it contains these elements; overall accurate shape, the upper and lower eye lid, the pupil, the iris, the sclera or white of the eye, the upper and lower lashes, the eyebrow, the corner membrane, and the catch-light.

Components of the Eye. There are a lot of components of the eye and it is the most complicated facial feature to paint. If your painting is not to be too detailed, you can omit the eye lids the corner membrane and maybe even the lashes. The pupil should be black or extremely dark using burnt umber and it usually has a reflection in it. This reflection or catch-light should be two toned, matching the whites of the eyes. The iris will have several tones and is never just one color. The whites of the eyes are never pure white but shades of gray, and will most likely not be the brightest spot on the face or the whole painting. I usually add a tiny bit of red in the corner membrane.

Also, when painting the eyes, remember proportion. There is most usually a distance of one eye width between the two eyes.

Painting the Eye. Paint in the white first. Now paint in the iris. Fill in the iris area with most of the iris color. Add specks of other color within the iris. The iris is usually quite a few colors. Brown eyes have a touch of black and maybe even yellow. Study your subject for accurate color variation. Use an out lineof a darker shade like burnt sienna and outline the entire iris. Now with the same burnt sienna paint in a pupil. Depending on how the light hits the eye will depend on where the catch-light of the iris will be. Make sure that the catch-light hits both eyes in generally the same spot however. A line painted in over the top of the eye will serve as the upper eyelid. Some people have a definite line to define the lower lid as well. The eyelids should be painted how you see them.

Eyelashes When painting eyelashes, paint what you see as well. In reality peoples eyelashes rarely protrude straight up like a cartoon! Eyelashes are usually seen as protruding slightly upward and sideways. They are usually in small clumps as well. I have found that sometimes when painting a man's eyelashes, less is more. Sometimes they get one or two tiny lashes and that is it. The same hold true for children and even women. Paint a few representative lines to indicate lashes, step back and look at it before going on. Also remember not to create them too long as they will look unnatural.

Eyebrows The last parts of the eye to mention are the brows. You can easily overdo the brows if you aren't careful. Again, study your subject and review lessons in "How To" books for practice.

Finish Details. You will add tiny but important details now to finish the eye.

6 Simple Steps to Paint Your Car - How to Paint a Car Spray Painting

With money being tight nowadays, perhaps the solution to giving your car a new look would be to indulge in some car spray painting. If the mechanics of it are in good shape, but the body is not so hot, then painting it may be the ideal solution.

It is a great money saver, but even more so if you do it yourself as opposed to having it professionally done. You can do it if you learn the basics and follow the instructions for car spray painting. It's important though if you decide you are going to undertake this project that you are prepared to see it through till the end.

Paint

First of all, you need some supplies. These consist of:
- coverings to protect the unpainted areas and masking tape to hold these in place
- a good car wash detergent and brush as well as a wax/grease remover. The car must be
- various grits of sandpaper
- primers and paint that is urethane base for the car spray painting
- paint sprayer
- safety equipment such as masks, goggles and protective clothing
- knife and putty for fill ins.

One:
You must be sure that you wash the car thoroughly to remove all grime and debris. If you don't then these things will be set in with your paint, giving a very discouraging look to the finished job. Follow up with a wax/grease remover so the paint you use for the car spray painting will adhere properly.

Two:
Remove any rough spots by sanding. Once this has been done be sure to rinse off any of the loose sandings. This is where you will want to use the putty to fill in any minor pit marks, that are have been caused from stones for example.

Three:
Don't get in too much of a hurry to start your car spray painting. The car must be completely dry so it is best to leave it to do so for a few hours. You can go ahead and cover any of the areas that your do not want to get paint on.

Four:
Now you are ready to start with the primer. Don't skip this step, as it will give a much improved look to the finished project. It helps the paint to adhere properly and allows for a more even finish. Next, once the primer is dry you will need to lightly sand it down.

Five:
You are finally at the step you have been waiting for. Its time to apply the color for your car spray painting. Whether you have chosen to use aerosol paints or a spray gun, the premise remains the same. Only apply thin coats. Several will probably be needed. Many light coats are much better than one thick coat. You will be able to tell just by looking at the car how many more coats of paint it will need. Some may only need two whereas others may need three or four.

Six:
Finally, down to the last step and that's applying the clear coat. This is done exactly the same as the colored coats.

Now you can clean up, step back and admire the masterpiece you have created.
