How to Paint People - Painting Human Eyes - Learning to Paint

Let's take a look at some step by step tutorials and techniques I use to paint people, specifically focusing on how to paint eyes with acrylic paint. This lesson is about painting and does not cover drawing skills or address proportion to a great extent. If you learn to use the correct techniques on your already finished drawing, you should do fine.

Accurate Drawing. First, you should start with an accurate drawing of the subject you plan on painting. Some artist use the grid method, while others free hand the initial drawing. One hint that you need to take to heart is this; If you don't have an accurate drawing, do not attempt to paint the person. You more than likely will not achieve a likeness if you don't have a likeness first in pencil.

Painting the eyes. I like to start my portraits with the eyes. Every single time that you paint an eye make sure it contains these elements; overall accurate shape, the upper and lower eye lid, the pupil, the iris, the sclera or white of the eye, the upper and lower lashes, the eyebrow, the corner membrane, and the catch-light.

Components of the Eye. There are a lot of components of the eye and it is the most complicated facial feature to paint. If your painting is not to be too detailed, you can omit the eye lids the corner membrane and maybe even the lashes. The pupil should be black or extremely dark using burnt umber and it usually has a reflection in it. This reflection or catch-light should be two toned, matching the whites of the eyes. The iris will have several tones and is never just one color. The whites of the eyes are never pure white but shades of gray, and will most likely not be the brightest spot on the face or the whole painting. I usually add a tiny bit of red in the corner membrane.

Also, when painting the eyes, remember proportion. There is most usually a distance of one eye width between the two eyes.

Painting the Eye. Paint in the white first. Now paint in the iris. Fill in the iris area with most of the iris color. Add specks of other color within the iris. The iris is usually quite a few colors. Brown eyes have a touch of black and maybe even yellow. Study your subject for accurate color variation. Use an out lineof a darker shade like burnt sienna and outline the entire iris. Now with the same burnt sienna paint in a pupil. Depending on how the light hits the eye will depend on where the catch-light of the iris will be. Make sure that the catch-light hits both eyes in generally the same spot however. A line painted in over the top of the eye will serve as the upper eyelid. Some people have a definite line to define the lower lid as well. The eyelids should be painted how you see them.

Eyelashes When painting eyelashes, paint what you see as well. In reality peoples eyelashes rarely protrude straight up like a cartoon! Eyelashes are usually seen as protruding slightly upward and sideways. They are usually in small clumps as well. I have found that sometimes when painting a man's eyelashes, less is more. Sometimes they get one or two tiny lashes and that is it. The same hold true for children and even women. Paint a few representative lines to indicate lashes, step back and look at it before going on. Also remember not to create them too long as they will look unnatural.

Eyebrows The last parts of the eye to mention are the brows. You can easily overdo the brows if you aren't careful. Again, study your subject and review lessons in "How To" books for practice.

Finish Details. You will add tiny but important details now to finish the eye.

How to Paint Laminate Countertops - 4 Easy Steps

We are often asked how to paint an existing laminate countertop, and if it is even possible. Yes, you can paint countertops, but you need to prepare the countertop surface carefully beforehand with special primer. Here's how.

(1) Wash the countertop with some ammonia-based cleaner or some warm ammonia diluted with water. Get it as clean as possible, removing all dirt and grime. When the surface is dry, you may wish to put strips of low-tack painter's tape on any trim around the countertop.

(2) The next step is to prime the countertop surface with a bonding primer, this will make sure the paint will stick to a non-porous surface. Some good bonding primers are XIM 400, Sherwin-Williams PrepRite®, or Zinssers Bin. Follow the primer manufacturers instructions; plan on allowing the primer to set for about 24 hours before painting. The odor can be strong, so consider opening windows and closing the room off from the rest of the house when using these products.

(3) When the primer is dry, it's time to paint your selected new color paint to the existing laminate countertop. Nothing changes a kitchen's look quite so much as countertop finishes, so make sure you've matched swatches to your existing colors - appliances, walls, flooring and all. If you use your laminate countertops to prepare food directly on, use water based paint; the chemicals in oil based paints may leech into your food, which is not a good thing. Apply two to three thin layers of paint, letting them dry between each coating. If you like, and are feeling creative, you can stencil-paint some patterned borders on your laminate countertops new base paint as well at this point.

(4) The final step is to seal the paint. Three coats of satin or high-gloss non-yellowing polyurethane will give you maximum durability. I prefer water-based sealer; it will not alter the appearance of your paint's colors when it dries. Allow the sealer to dry 24 hrs. You might have to order take-out dinners for a couple of days, but it will be worth it when you see your fabulous new painted laminate countertops in your kitchen.

How to Paint Simple Pine Trees

Pine trees are one of the easiest trees to add to a painting and are often the first tree that new artists attempt. Pines add color and are very common trees, so to add them to almost any painting is a good way to practice.

I usually start with the trunk. Use the side of a fan brush or any narrow brush and paint in a vertical "line" or trunk. This trunk may only be slightly visible when the tree is finished. Use an off white or gray color.

There are several types of pine trees. If you are striving for a specific type, study pictures and try to get the general shape of the needles correct. Remember, painting is about illusion, so you do not replicate every single needle! In general the branches are perpendicular to the trunk and widen as you go lower. There are not too many off branches of each main branch so don't over do it.

Painting in the needles can be done in a couple of ways. I always start at the top though. The simplest way is to use the fan brush - turned on it's side and dab. You won't have detail of individual needles, but it will look like a pine tree. Leave some bare or negative space on your tree. This is as important as painting the tree in the first place!

Another way to create the tree is to paint in the branches and the clusters of needles. Needles are painted in with quick strokes using a very fine brush. Let them over lap and grow from different directions. Look at samples before you start. It might be good idea to sketch in the branches and needle locations if you chose this method.

Another tip for realistic looking pine trees is to add shading and highlights. For shading, you can darken the color of the tree either towards the base or on either side depending on the direction of light. For highlights, it is simply a matter of dabbing on a color lighter than the tree color on select spots where the sun or light would be hitting it.

The trick to painting realistic pine trees is to practice, practice, and practice. Take your time, and you will become an expert in no time.

Remove any rough spots by sanding. Once this has been done be sure to rinse off any of the loose sandings. This is where you will want to use the putty to fill in any minor pit marks, that are have been caused from stones for example.

Three:
Don't get in too much of a hurry to start your car spray painting. The car must be completely dry so it is best to leave it to do so for a few hours. You can go ahead and cover any of the areas that your do not want to get paint on.

Four:
Now you are ready to start with the primer. Don't skip this step, as it will give a much improved look to the finished project. It helps the paint to adhere properly and allows for a more even finish. Next, once the primer is dry you will need to lightly sand it down.

Five:
You are finally at the step you have been waiting for. Its time to apply the color for your car spray painting. Whether you have chosen to use aerosol paints or a spray gun, the premise remains the same. Only apply thin coats. Several will probably be needed. Many light coats are much better than one thick coat. You will be able to tell just by looking at the car how many more coats of paint it will need. Some may only need two whereas others may need three or four.

Six:
Finally, down to the last step and that's applying the clear coat. This is done exactly the same as the colored coats.

Now you can clean up, step back and admire the masterpiece you have created.

Bismuth Oxychloride in Mineral Makeup

Does this scenario sound familiar? You've worn traditional makeup for years with little to no irritation. Upon hearing about the benefits of mineral makeup, you decide to give it a try. After all, it claims to be better for your skin and healthier overall, so what have you got to lose? And if you've never been able to wear traditional makeup without irritation, mineral makeup sounds like the answer you've been looking for. You buy your first jar and begin wearing it immediately.

Except... you're having a reaction you've never had before to makeup. Your skin may be red, irritated, itching, having small bumps or pustules, burning or looking swollen. What is this? How can mineral makeup cause such an extreme reaction?

Makeup

That reaction is likely caused by the ingredient bismuth oxychloride. While bismuth oxychloride is a common ingredient in traditional makeup, as well as mineral makeup, it is used in much higher concentrations in mineral makeup. There are no fillers in mineral makeup like there are in traditional cosmetics (talc, mineral oil, aluminum powder, alcohols and parabens), so the few ingredients left, including bismuth oxychloride, make up more of the recipe.

Why Is Bismuth Oxychloride Used In Makeup?

Is it used in makeup because it gives the makeup a silky feel, good slip (this means it applies well to the skin and doesn't drag or grab on the skin) and good adhesion, which helps it stay on your skin. It feels smooth and silky when rubbed between the fingers. It is often described as a lustrous crystalline powder.

It is not the most expensive ingredient, nor is it the least expensive. It is, however, an industry standard and very common. It also gives a visible sheen to the makeup, so it's good at refracting light and that helps draw attention away from, and camouflage, fine lines, wrinkles and minor discolorations. That's a great selling point for makeup.

What Is Bismuth Oxychloride?

Bismuth oxychloride is an inorganic white pigment, and usually comes in two forms: diamond and pearl finishes. The diamond is shimmery and the pearl is more matte. It's formula is BiOCl.

If you look on the periodic table of elements, you'll notice plain old bismuth at atomic number 83, with the symbol Bi. It is the least toxic of it's periodic table neighbors like lead, tin, antimony and polonium. Bismuth in itself is not safe for use in cosmetics, and must be refined and combined with other elements to produce bismuth oxychloride.

Bismuth occurs naturally, but in very small amounts. Most of the bismuth produced in the USA is as a by-product from refining lead, tin, copper, silver and gold ores.

Once the bismuth has been harvested, it is further refined through several processes to remove dangerous elements like lead. Then it is chlorinated, which gives us bismuth chloride (BiCl3). It still poses a severe risk at this point, smelling of hydrochloric acid. When bismuth chloride is combined with water, it starts to decompose and part of the chlorine is replaced by oxygen from the water. This process is called hydrolysis. The remaining compound is bismuth, chlorine and oxygen; Bismuth oxychloride.

Is It Safe To Use?

Bismuth oxychloride is a product that is FDA approved for use in products for the face, eyes, lips and nails. It is a very common and popular ingredient in both traditional and mineral makeup.

However, skin irritation from bismuth oxychloride is not unusual. According the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for bismuth oxychloride, there is a risk of it being a potential irritant to humans when it comes in contact with the skin or eyes.

It is also imperative that bismuth oxychloride be free from toxins when it hits the market. The FDA does have standards outlining this, and in their Electronic Code of Federal Regulations they dictate the composition must be free of impurities except lead, arsenic, volatile matter and mercury in specific amounts and must be 98% bismuth oxychloride.

Buying bismuth oxychloride from countries with less stringent laws may result in increased health risks, so it is wise for companies to buy from highly regulated countries, like the US and Canada.

Should I Use It?

This is a very personal question to answer. Are you are happy with your current makeup and are suffering no ill effects? Would you feel more comfortable using makeup without it? Do you find that you have to buff minerals with bismuth oxychloride into your pores or they are more obvious, and this is irritating your skin? Have you found using mineral makeup without it causes your skin relief and the reaction clears up?

These are all questions to ask yourself when deciding to purchase a brand with bismuth oxychloride as an ingredient. There are many good products available, offering the same benefits as products with bismuth oxychloride, but without the ingredient itself.

Makeup Tips For Brown Eyes

Brown eyes come in many different shades so let's look at a kaleidoscope of colors to help us to enhance eye color. Colors opposite each other will be complementary so, will work to brighten each other up. For example: Red and green, orange and blue, purple and yellow. Depending on the shade of brown your eyes are will determine the shades of eye shadow you may use to brighten the brown which, may give you the effect of lightening that you are after, especially if you use colors that shimmer. If your eyes have a yellow tinge, try using an eye shadow with a purple tone.

The next thing you need to consider is the one rule of makeup that will always guide you: Light colors bring out, make larger and highlight. Dark colors recede, minimize or contour. So with this in mind you could work with dark eyeliner and light eye shadow colors to emphasize your dark chocolate eyes with black liner, mascara, a smudge of pale pink eye shadow, and finish with lightly flushed cheeks and make your lips your signature. Create lip focus with a red or berry stain. To pull color focus from your eyes, giving the illusion of lighter eyes, go for a deeper shade of lip color.

I would definitely recommend you have a play with colored eyeliners. Just remember to combine with a lighter shadow or your eyes may look more dramatic. There are various methods of using eyeliner. Pencils are the most versatile eye-defining tools, as you can start softly, blending each layer back if it starts to become too heavy looking. Pencil can be smudged softly, or add depth under an eye shadow for a muted look, or used alone for strongly defined eyes.

Liquid eyeliner is much more dramatic, and can be applied over top of your eye pencil for added intensity, or used under eye shadow to enhance your eye shape. Both of these techniques ensure longwearing eyeliner.

For the most natural way to line your eyes, use a small, firm brush and apply eye shadow as your eyeliner. Make the most of your dark brown eyes, using soft pinks to really bring them out. Use brown mascara for day, and a black/brown mascara for evening or special occasions. Keep eyeliner to a minimum though. Just use it to softly frame your eyes. Avoid all black as it tends to be too strong. Chocolates, deep plums and charcoals smudged into your lashes will do the trick. You might like to try adding a very subtle contour in a soft mushroom color on your brow bone just above your crease and blend this softly.

On the days you feel like your eyes need a pick-me-up, jazz up your eye make-up a little. Graduating your eye makeup from at your lash line to your brow will give your eyes more depth. Use the darkest shade along your lash line, and merge into lighter shades nearer your brow. Contouring and shading can create the illusion of different eye shapes. By using dark to minimize and light to make larger, you can play with altering the length and size of your eyes. ?

If you just want to keep it simple, sweep a shimmery pastel shadow all over your lid, curl your lashes, apply 2 to 3 coats dark grey charcoal or dark brown mascara, and add a few individual false lashes on the outer corner of your eyes!

Also, they may contain a lot of additives to produce various properties like: antifreeze, foam control, bacterial growth control and pigment stability.

Furthermore, emulsion paint can be applied either as gas (aerosol) or as liquid. Generally, you will apply it by means of brushes, paint rollers and other instruments. Once it is applied, paint can be blended with other painted regions within a certain interval of time (known as "open time"). This interval can be extended by addition of white spirit or other glycols.
